LOS ANGELES — California Sen. Alex Padilla was detained and handcuffed during an altercation at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Video provided by Padilla’s office shows the senator approaching the lectern as Noem was touting federal law enforcement’s immigration crackdown efforts in Los Angeles. He was stopped and shoved back by multiple men.
“I’m Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,” he said. He tried to speak further as he was forcibly removed into an adjoining room, where he yelled “Hands off!”
The video shows Padilla being forced to the ground and his arms handcuffed behind his back. He has since been released and is in a holding room. The spokesperson said the senator was told he could speak to Noem after the event.
The confrontation earned a swift rebuke from fellow Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who condemned the action from the floor shortly thereafter.
“Forcibly removing a United States Senator from a press conference is disgraceful,” Rep. Pete Aguilar, the third-ranking Democrat in the House, said on X. “This administration’s chaos and corruption is out of control.”

Sec 4-Using National Security Assets for Law and Order Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of Homeland Security and the heads of agencies as appropriate, shall increase the provision of excess MILITARY and NATIONAL SECURITY assets in local jurisdictions to assist state & local law enforcement.”Many think it’s a road too far for Trump to declare Martial Law (i.e. S. Korea) or to invoke the Insurrection Act. In Sec. 4 he says he plans to deploy by EO military and national security assets to our towns and cities to assist local law enforcement. They would be there to see that police and “local leaders” are not relying on state and community laws and norms but are aligned with the Administration’s best practices created to enforce Donald Trump’s objectives and narratives, many of which are illegal. Tyranny in America requires the subjugation of a widely dispersed American population and cannot quickly happen from Washington DC. What if he could do this simply by Executive Order, with the willing participation of DOJ, DHS and DOD, send U.S. Armed Services and other “national security assets” to your home town?

He’s also repeatedly promoted the upside of Americans enduring Soviet-era deprivation on his behalf. “I don't think a beautiful baby girl that's 11 years old needs to have 30 dolls,” Trump said. “I think they can have three dolls or four dolls ... they don't need to have 250 pencils. They can have five."

Probably the cruelty and arrogance of the people in charge, and the fecklessness of so many institutions that were supposed to fight back. Maybe the image of the world’s richest men, and some of their wives, sitting obediently in front of the president’s cabinet on Inauguration Day. Or the way the New York Times described Elon Musk as having “extended his arm diagonally upward, palm facing down.” Or the enthusiasm with which the Secretary of Agriculture encouraged Americans to raise chickens. Or the words, “They hate our beef because our beef is beautiful and theirs is weak.”
But personally, I’m going to remember all the mistakes.
I have never seen a government get so many things wrong, in so many different ways. It was like an Obamacare website every 18 hours. It was like the soft opening of Jurassic Park. And these were not the sort of run-of-the-mill snafus that are endemic to any large organization. They all had something in common: People who thought they knew better than everyone else took on work they didn’t understand, and sidelined the people who did. They were making mistakes, quite simply, because the people who didn’t make mistakes were gone, and because there was no one left to tell them not to, or to correct them when they did.

Sent Harvard an “unauthorized” list of demands, which led the nation’s wealthiest university to stop negotiating with the administration and fight back in the courts.
Rescinded job offers for the Veterans Crisis Line, “due to an administrative error.”
Fired Health and Human Services employees that, according to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., “should not have been cut.”
Accidentally fired, and tried to rehire, employees at the National Animal Health Laboratory Network who were working on the administration’s response to bird flu.
Fired, and scrambled to rehire, people responsible for maintaining the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
Fired, and then un-fired, workers at the Environmental Protection Agency.
Fired, and then rehired, people responsible for ensuring the safety of medical devices.
Fired workers at the Small Business Administration, then un-fired them, and then fired them again.
Accidentally fired people who had already taken a buyout offer.
Tried to fire 22 US attorneys, but sent the termination emails to the wrong addresses.

Of all the lawless acts by the Trump administration in its first two and a half months, none are more frightening than its dumping of human beings who have not had their day in court into an infamous maximum-security prison in El Salvador — and then contending that no federal court has the authority to right these brazen wrongs.
In an astounding brief filed in the Supreme Court on Monday, the solicitor general of the United States argued that even when the government concedes that it has mistakenly deported someone to El Salvador and had him imprisoned there, the federal courts are powerless to do anything about it. The Supreme Court must immediately and emphatically reject this unwarranted claim of unlimited power to deprive people of their liberty without due process.
That would seem to be the obvious response. It was Thomas Jefferson who called the right of habeas corpus to protect against unlawful detention one of the “essential principles of our government.”
Jefferson’s concerns are underscored by the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a lawful resident of the United States, whom the federal government admits it wrongly deported to El Salvador. He has been incarcerated in El Salvador along with some 200 Venezuelan migrants deported there last month by the Trump administration, which says they were involved in criminal and gang activity.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is set to put a Senate-passed tax cut bill up for a vote on Wednesday that would put Republicans one step closer to slashing taxes for the rich while at the same time cutting critical benefits like Medicaid and food stamps.
The Senate passed their budget version in the wee hours of Saturday morning, which would explode the deficit by $5.8 trillion over the next decade in order to extend President Donald Trump's 2017 tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest taxpayers.
While the Senate budget does not call for the more than $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid or $230 billion in cuts to food stamps, House Republican leadership is urging Republicans to pass the Senate bill so they can move to the next step of the budget reconciliation process—in which Republicans will have to put actual pen to paper to say what cuts they will make, rather than just provide topline numbers.
House Republican leaders are trying to sell the Senate budget to angry rank-and-file House GOP lawmakers by saying they will still be able to make the massive cuts to Medicaid and food stamps—despite what the Senate budget calls for.

The New York Times is reporting that the Canadian government is taking President Donald Trump's threats to make it America's "51st state" incredibly seriously based on a phone call Trump had last month with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
During the call, the Times' sources say, Trump "told Mr. Trudeau that he did not believe that the treaty that demarcates the border between the two countries was valid and that he wants to revise the boundary" and he also "mentioned revisiting the sharing of lakes and rivers between the two nations, which is regulated by a number of treaties."
Trump did not offer any specifics or additional information about what "revising" the border would look like but it was apparently enough to convince Trudeau that the president really had ambitions to annex his country as an American territory.
As if that weren't enough, the Times reports that Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has told Canadian officials that Trump is interested in ripping up decades-old treaties signed between the United States and Canada.

Musk laid out his plan in vivid detail, starting with the illegal firing of thousands of Social Security staffers who manage the payments system and ensure beneficiaries get their checks on time.
The richest man in the world wants to destroy the most important source of income for retired people, who have paid into Social Security their entire working lives. Even more unsettling, Musk's remarks have been completely ignored in mainstream media.

... it would be wrong to dismiss Mr. Trump’s dizzying array of pronouncements and executive actions on foreign policy as simply the fulfillment of his campaign promises. He did not run on the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D., the conquest of Greenland or the occupation of Gaza.
Rather than showing strength, his foreign policy betrays a loss of American self-confidence and self-respect, eliminating any pretense that the United States stands for the things it has claimed to support since fighting two world wars: freedom, self-determination and collective security.
In many ways, Mr. Trump cuts a more familiar picture from history: an aging strongman musing about territorial expansion to consolidate power and cement his legacy.
At best, this kind of foreign policy will help shape an international order reformed in opposition to American excess; at worst, it could accelerate a global trend toward disorder and great-power conflict.
Consider what the rest of the world has seen these past few weeks. Mr. Trump is the first president in my lifetime to enter office pledging to “expand our territory.” He has insisted the United States take back the Panama Canal and seize Greenland, despite repeated objections from the governments and people of those countries.
It’s possible this is posturing to open negotiations, albeit for things that aren’t top of mind for most Americans: reducing fees for U.S. vessels transiting the Panama Canal or obtaining more access to resources and military bases in Greenland. It’s also possible Mr. Trump means what he says about territorial expansion. In any case, Mr. Trump’s targets do not suggest strength.
Picking on Panama and Greenland or threatening trade wars with Canada and Mexico has the feel of a schoolyard bully looking for someone smaller to push around.
While these fights may offer immediate political wins, the world does not live and die by the rhythms of American news cycles or the alternative reality of Fox News and OANN. It looks at us from the outside in and sees a president ignoring state sovereignty, which has been the cornerstone of global stability since the World Wars — and doing so at a time when Vladimir Putin is trying to subsume parts of Ukraine, Xi Jinping is committed to asserting control over Taiwan, and some Israeli politicians are pushing for annexation of Gaza and the West Bank, all under the guise of national security.
If the United States exempts itself from the rules, why will other nations follow them? This is one reason Mr. Trump’s suggestion that the United States take ownership of Gaza and turn it into the Middle East’s Riviera was so jarring. Like many things Mr. Trump proposes, it is unlikely to happen (again, hardly a show of strength). But it further legitimizes the idea that two million Palestinians in Gaza should abandon land they do not want to leave and ignores the fact that neighboring Arab states like Egypt and Jordan would be destabilized by complicity in ethnic cleansing. Moreover, it implicitly endorses a view of foreign policy that strips less powerful nations and peoples of any right to determine their own fate. Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister, seized on this new reality: “Now,” he said after Mr. Trump’s remarks, “we will work to completely bury the dangerous idea of a Palestinian state.” If Mr. Trump were concerned about the plight of Gazans, he would not be destroying the U.S. agency responsible for helping them rebuild.
Already, the global freeze on foreign assistance and suspension of much of U.S.A.I.D.’s work force renders the agency incapable of supporting the tenuous cease-fire in Gaza with humanitarian assistance, never mind the more arduous tasks of clearing rubble, defusing unexploded bombs and providing shelter to hundreds of thousands of civilians who have lost their homes.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) was created by Congress in 1999 in order to consolidate several Department of Energy functions under one bureaucratic roof: acquiring fissile material, manufacturing nuclear weapons, and preventing America’s nuclear technology from leaking. It has all manner of sensitive information on hand, including nuclear-weapon designs and the blueprints for reactors that power Navy ships and submarines. Even the Australian Navy, which has purchased some of these submarines, is not privy to their precise inner workings, James Acton, a co-director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told me. So far, the people who work for DOGE have not wished to be slowed down by cumbersome information-security protocols. Late last week, they reportedly demanded access to a sensitive Treasury Department system that controls government payments.
When the most senior civil servant at the Treasury raised security concerns, DOGE engineers were undeterred, according to The New York Times. They were happy to blast ahead while he resigned in protest. The employees at DOGE are reportedly working seven days a week, on very little sleep. This slumber-party atmosphere isn’t a great fit for the sober and secretive world of nuclear weapons, where security lapses are hugely consequential. I spoke with three former officials and nuclear experts about what might happen if DOGE were to take a too-cavalier approach to the NNSA. None believed that Musk’s auditors would try to steal important information—although it is notable that not everyone at DOGE is a federal employee, many lack the security clearance to access the information they are seeking, and Musk had to be stopped from hiring a noncitizen.
Nuclear-security lapses don’t need to be intentional to cause lasting damage. “When access to the NNSA’s sensitive systems is not granted through proper channels, they can be compromised by accident,” the former senior official at the Department of Energy, who requested anonymity to discuss internal matters, told me. “You could stumble across some incredibly sensitive things if you are coming at it sideways.” DOGE employees might try to avoid file systems that are known to contain nuclear-weapons designs. But they could still create some risk simply by inquiring into the ways that the NNSA spends money abroad, Acton said. (Overseas expenditures have been a focus for DOGE.) The NNSA helps other governments keep highly enriched uranium secure within their own borders, and also arranges for them to ship it to the United States for safekeeping. The details of these agreements may include information about the degree to which a country’s uranium is enriched, its precise whereabouts, and the nature of the security systems that protect it—all of which are very sensitive.
If one of Musk’s recruits were to access this information on their personal laptop, they could expose those secrets to hackers or spies... None of this is to say that the NNSA should be exempted from questions about its budget. The agency likely overspends on some things, as any bureaucracy will. But nonexperts will struggle to determine what is essential and what is excessive in its highly specialized and technical realm. Building nuclear weapons is not like making widgets. DOGE can try to root out waste, but it should take its time, and avoid the break-it-to-rebuild-it approach that Musk tends to prefer. A tech-start-up mindset might be dangerous, the former official told me. “That doesn’t work with nuclear weapons.”
